Betty’s Place, nestled deep in the heart of Hollywood, serves home-cooked soul food alongside Betty’s famous jerk chicken. The chicken is dynamite – as smoky and tender as can be, chopped into largish, bone-in chunks, and slathered with a superspicy, peppercorn-rich jerk sauce. You can also find jerk ribs and wings with the same preparation or with Betty’s own sweet barbecue sauce. The shop opens at the break of dawn and serves Southern breakfasts, complete with sausage, bacon, salmon croquettes, fried grouper, and corn beef hash, until 11:30 a.m. and lunch until 4 p.m. The prices on the lunches are out of control too -- $6.99 gets you a plate of chicken, a huge mound of rice and peas, and a homemade side of anything from corn to collards. - John Linn
